Two independent layers: light and stars
The picture is built from two layers that move on their own. The light layer is the slow, vivid fluid: separate colour blobs with veins and glitter, swirling and blooming in deep black. Behind it drifts the starfield layer, a calm 3D field of stars you can switch on or off. Because each layer evolves independently, the two never line up the same way twice, which is part of why no two renders are alike.

Old Light now has a second engine. The Mandala generator draws a symmetric, kaleidoscopic mandala, wreaths of petals, gems, rings, and fine lace around a glowing core, then lets it slowly morph from one design into the next: shapes merge, colours migrate, and even the symmetry crossfades. Same idea, different geometry: rendered in your browser, never repeating, silent as a screensaver or downloaded as a music video.
Built from formulas, never the same twice
Old Light is pure math, not AI. There is no model, no prompt, and no training data, so it never drifts or melts the way AI video does over a long clip. A real-time fluid simulation runs on your GPU and draws every frame from formulas seeded with many layers of randomness. That randomization is why the pattern never repeats: each render starts from a different state and keeps evolving, with no loop to come back around to. Is it a fractal? Mostly no. It is not a classic fractal zoom, though fractal math is used in places inside the formulas, and we expect to add new looks that lean on fractals more heavily over time.
How long does it take to render?
Everything renders on your own computer, mostly on the GPU, so nothing is uploaded and the speed depends on your machine. It runs in any modern browser, with Chrome or Edge best for video export, a little faster on some computers and a little slower on others. On a quick laptop it renders several times faster than realtime, so a one minute clip can finish in well under a minute. A rough guide for one minute of 1080p, 30 fps video:

Approximate, and your mileage will vary. The figures are anchored on a measured run (Apple M3 Max in Chrome, about 3x faster than realtime at 1080p, 30 fps); the rest are estimates. The biggest factors are your GPU and its hardware video encoder. 4K and 60 fps take roughly 3 to 5 times longer. A silent screensaver and a music video render at the same speed, since the work is in the visuals.
